The courts gave Derek 40 years in prison. Then, for the rest of his life he will be on the Sex Offender Registry.I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have been punished. We all know that we have rules that we have to abide by everyday, but I think that 40 years is way too harsh.
Discuss It!
This 18 year old attempted sex with a thirteen year old and a fourteen year old. He should know better.

That's not the point, he may have broke a law, but 40 years in prison is cruel punishment.

I agree with Freemod and RedPanda. 14 is too young, and an 18-year-old should know better, but ruining his entire life over it is just taking the law to the point of absurdity. These kind of laws should have a penalty directly proportional to the age difference...and no scarlet letter.

Actually, after reading the story, I'm even more upset with this sentence...did he even know how old the girl was that he had sex with? After all, he was hardly "preying on" a 14-year-old girl who had sex with THREE guys in the same night and bragged about it. Sure, he still shouldn't have done it, but...it's not like he manipulated the girl's innocence and naivete for sex (which is the entire premise behind "statutory rape"). Jesus. Considering the circumstances, I think some community service and a written apology to the girl's parents should suffice.

Wow, that site is full of shocking stuff. Check out this story: http://cfcoklahoma.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=252:teen-love-turns-to-tragedy-sex-may-send-them-to-prison&catid=38:news-articles&Itemid=80

Oh, yea I see now.
Yea it's messed up. The girl was looking for sex, the 18 year old should get zero jail time.

I'm sorry, that's not consensual.
40 years is a bit excessive. Maybe he could go up for parole in ten years.

40 years is very excessive. What will probably happen is when this young man gets out. He won't be allowed to function in society. He will be a Tier III due to his "offense" and be banished to the fringes of society. He will not be allowed gainful employment due to the public registry. His life is pretty much over. If he marries and has a family, those children will be taunted at school and other children will not be allowed to play with his children for fear that this pedophile/predator will harm their children.
